This picture was taken in 1972 at the remains of the old Marion, Oh Speedway.  It was located northwest of Marion and featured "Roaring Roadsters".  Mr. Chivington, who later ran a motorcycle shop in Marion, promoted the races.  I had walked in to his shop to get some parts for my Yamaha and noticed all of the roadster pictures that lined the wall.  He asked me if I knew anything about them and I said, "yes, that #9 Roadster is Bob James from Cleveland".  We sat and talked for an hour or so about the old track and all the great drivers that raced their in the roadsters and also the great riders who ran the motocycle races.  He gave me directions to the place after we fixed my bike and the picture you see is soming off the back straight.  The high banks had worn down and not much was left of the old track.  Today it is a housing development, featuring big ticket houses.

I think somewhere in my posts on Northern Ohio racing is a picture of Bob James in the Pappy Groves #9 at speed, running the high groove.  There were no fences or guard rails, so if you weren't careful, you were going for a ride.

I must have my directions mixed up.  I was thinking about the houses at Powell.  My old landlord, Merle Reed, built a big house out near where I thought the speedway was, but that was in 1973 and I haven't been back there much since.  I did work for Bill and Shelby Guthery as the first announcer and pr guy for the dragstrip the first two years in operation, but I moved back to the Akron area.   Thanks for setting me straight.

As I recall it was north of Marion, but I can't remember if it was off Route 23 or Route 4.  I'll ask Kitty James (Bob's widow) if she remembers.   I remember getting the diredtions from Chivington and heading north on my bike.  That was in 1971!
