Originally there was racing at Reedurban Speedway I can't remember where it was. I think out off Perry or Genoa road. I do have a couple pictures from there. Pete Foltz and some buddies started running around in a cornfield and a speedway was born.
We also ran Manchester Speedway. That was up off of  Portage Rd between Highmill and Akron Ave. just before you got to rt93 on Johnson Ave.
I remember no lights and it was uphill into turn one downhill out of two and the same in three and four.
There was no water you brought your own.Sometimes there was a water truck.
At first there was no stands and you could sit in your car and watch if you wanted to.
I think it was like .50 cents to get in and it went up to a $1.00 as time went on.
The track is still there if you know where to look. At some point lights were added I don't know when or why cause we never raced there after Canton opened. You can see the tops of the lights from the road.
Canton Motor Speedway was opened as a track for midgets to run. There was NASCAR Modifieds running there also.
The track had problems drawing cars in these divisions and closed.
There likes of Bud Graham, Bill Oliver, Mike Klaypac, Gib Orr and Bob James ran with the Modifieds.
Come along about 1950 and the Canton Stock Car Racing Association needed a home.
They had lost theirs at the Stark County Fair grounds too much dust and noise for the neighbors and it was spooking the horses so the fairboard said NO MORE racing there.
I as a young member at the time I vaguely remember that the powers that were in control then Dutch Clapper, Warren Knepper, and (I'll have to dig out the Charter) took out an option on some land at where Belden Village sits now. I think is was for about $10 an acre to build at race track.
With the defunct Canton Motor Speedway sitting there doing nothing some one had the idea to race there.
The owner "Dutch" Raushenbauch was contacted and the rest is history.
The option was withdrawn at the Belden site (bad move as it turns out)and there was racing again in Canton.
After the races you could stop at the old Food City Drive In and get a "Nightmare" sandwich that was a king size burger something like a "Whopper". If you could eat 3 of them the third one was free.
That is where I met my friends stepson who was younger than I. As it turns out Warren "Sonny" Knepper was the first soldier from Stark County killed in Vietnam. His name is on the marker honoring those who served. It is on the square in Massillon Ohio.
Also on the Wall in Wahington DC.
They have his hometown as Phoeniz AZ. but I know different he was from Stark County and good Ole Canton.
Lots more on Canton Motor Speedway Racing to come.
I spent a lot of time in the "Stockcar Garage" up off of St.Elmo in Canton. We shared with Dick Dickerson and Glenn Mizer. Later on Donnie Allbritain and Dean Brandt joined us. Please send me pictures to post if you have them I have many but never enough.

Canton Motor Speedway had quite a history previous to 1952.

I know NASCAR Mods and Midgets ran there before the Canton Stock Car Racing Association moved in.

Baldy Baker-

A very young "Baldy Baker" Baldy just about owned Canton in the early 50's
At the time I was going there he only raced there on occasion.
When he did he was a threat to win.
One night his car was broken and I saw him take what was at the time a back marker car start tail in the feature and just clean everyones clock in that car.
I won't mention the car he drove that night but it was strong and Baldy proved it.

CANTON TWP. The past and the present of Canton Motor Speedway mingle in the life of Richard "Butch" Guinther
His mind harbors memories of the times as a child when he walked to the nearby speedway, drawn by the roar of cars racing only a few hundred feet from his home. He recalls, as well, the years of working at the race trace under a variety of owners.

But his view of the land on which the race track once sat is blocked by an earthen bank pushed there by the limestone operation that has been occupying the property since the track closed in 1992.

Still, those who worked during, drove in or watched races on Canton Motor Speedway's dirt and asphalt oval tracks likely soon will see the speedway almost as clearly as they did when its grandstands and concession booths were standing in southeast Canton.

Guinther, who handled maintenance at the track, and daughter Pam Wills, who worked concessions there, and others with ties to the track are organizing a Canton Motor Speedway Reunion II - the first was three years ago - Nov. 18 at VFW Post 3747 at 1935 Avalon Ave. NE. Call Wills at (330) 452-3725 or Guinther at (330) 456-1623 to make a reservation. A ticket charge of $15 will get those who attend the event a dinner and all the stories about the track that they can hear or tell.

Three years ago

"We planned the first reunion because the guy who owned it last (William Groves) kind of wanted to get together with some of the people who raced and worked there," said Guinther, who said that the initial gathering in 2003 filled a church hall.

Canton Motor Speedway was opened by Curt "Dutch" Rauschenbach early in the 1950s in the 2500-block of 14th Street SE, off Route 43 near Waco. Rauschenbach, who died several years ago, was a driver with a dream of owning his own track, said his widow, Betty. Drivers raced midgets initially, then jalopies and finally later model cars.

We had a wonderful business," said Mrs. Rauschenbach, who handled office duties at the Speedway. "People came down from Cleveland. We sold more at our food stands than they did up in Cleveland at the big track."

Guinther, who played baseball on the land where the Speedway was built, said he watched the track being built when he was a boy. After racing started, he became one of the track's first spectators.

"The kids (admission) price was 50 cents, and I would go around the neighborhood for a lawn to mow or a mailbox to paint just so I could get 50 cents to buy a ticket, or $1 if I wanted something to eat. I worked all week and hoped my mom would say, 'OK, you can go to the races.' "

A few years later, he began working at the track, doing maintenance with such other employees as Butch Stauffer and Art Homer. The track passed from the hands of the Rauschenbachs to Russ Rubino and Vince Pratts, then to Gene and Bob Tolloty. After township trustees blocked the operation of the Speedway by Paul Miller in 1981, claiming a racetrack was "undesirable," according to a track history in a Speedway program, the facility sat idle for three years.

The quarter-mile track was resurrected by Bill and Thelma Groves in 1982.

One of the best

"Bill Groves was one of the best owners ever; he ran it for 10 years," said Guinther, whose family helped clean up the abandoned race track before it reopened.

Weeds were pulled. Rundown buildings were repaired. Teen-aged drivers were discouraged from parking on what had become a "lovers lane." Racing resumed.

"We saw some good wrecks, some bad wrecks," said Wills, who worked at the track's concession stand in the 1980s. "There were some arguments. These guys raced together for years, so some bad blood would develop."

But, mostly the drivers went about their business as if members of a fraternity, helping each other out, said Guinther, when a car needed to be repaired for the next race. A Repository article by Don Lightner perhaps captures typical Speedway driver most accurately.

"While they race for money, all have full-time jobs. Racing for pots in the thousands of dollars like nationally-known figures is only a dream," wrote Lightner. "Drivers at Canton Motor Speedway are sportsmen, nothing more or nothing less. They simply love the game and most are satisfied to break-even financially."

The yellowed clipping is taped to a page in one of the scrapbooks Guinther kept during the years he worked at the Speedway. Other pages give space to articles and pictures of such early drivers as Bob Bennett, Pete Foltz, Bob Petty, Dick Mills, Les Wise, Lenny Lowe, Gary Allbritain, Ernie Wanner, Bob Schneider, Gary Miday and Pete, Red and Robbie Robinson. The scrapbooks also contain clippings about such later drivers as Tony Diano, Tony Diano Jr., Brian Volk, Chuck Harris, Melissa McCormick, Jerry Wendling, Bob Sibila and Ed and Eddie McLean.

Articles talk of the duties of flagman Eddie Myers, rescue vehicle operators Gary Suter and Roger Spitale, and announcer Dusty McCollum,

"Good evening everyone, and welcome to Canton Motor Speedway," McCollum used to intone each time racing started on a Saturday night.

Even in the absence of McCollum, the recognizable voice no doubt will be heard by many at the Speedway reunion next month. There is evidence that people have been hearing McCollum's greeting for years.

"As long as the Speedway's been gone, you see people stop there," said Guinther. "A car will stop, and someone will get out and walk up the bank. They'll stand on the bank and stare. I don't know whether they were drivers or mechanics, but there still are people who come out and look back there."

Eddie Myers.
Eddie was one of the good guys and a friend to me. He was one of the guys that liked to drive but didn't like to work on the car. I remember one time I was puting in a transmission and I ask eddie to finish it up for me by tightening evrything up. He didn't and the transmission case broke and we both got in trouble.
Always smiling but when he got mad look out he was tough. He worked for the EO Gas company and when he went into management they didn't want him driving. He did on occasion and was always at odds with the company.
He was a flagman at CMS for many years also.

he would also do a stint in Indy car racing.

"Little" Jimmy Fisher. Jimmy wasn't so little hence the nickname.
He was also known as the "Mayor" of East Canton.
Was he ever the Mayor? I don't know. I don't think Jimmy is with us anymore.

I think everyone that race Canton early on got upside down at one time or another.
Here it was Jimmies turn.

Before Canton Motor Speedway

Before Canton Motor Speedway there was Manchester Speedway. This track was cut out of a cornfield. It was uphill into 1 downhill out of 2 and likewise 3 and 4. Absolutely no amenities we carried our own water.
A Knepper car won the feature there on a Sunday afternoon and took home 13 dollars.

1970's Tony Diano
Posted on January 5, 2007 at 11:45:58 PM by SuperDave

I'm going to post a later picture just for the heck of it.
Tony Diano had two sons that could wheel racecars.
He now has a grandson coming along that is quite a wheelman too.

Tony Diano with "Big" Richie Walter in the background. I origially had him as Niles Rohrer, Chuck Harris straightened that out for me.
Denny Hudock collection.

Tony Meyers,303 Vogt, John and Harry,Zero car

Zero Car in Allbritains Garage
Jack Vogt's 303 GMC's
John Patterson owner and Harry Carpenter driver.
At Johns Fleet Wing on Mahoning rd.
Tony Meyers at John Andersons Shell on 12th St Canton
It was next to the Friendly Tavern there is a Clark Station there now.
The 7 was a Hudson driven by Bubbles Swinehart.
That car blew a hole in the motor one night and threw a rod out of the side of the block.
The rod layed in turn one and glowed red for a number of laps.
Bubbles won the feature on 5 cylinders.
Then the car came out in the powder puff derby race and won that .
I think Jo was driving

Donnie Allbritain, I think Bates owned the car here.
Looks to be Jim Abrecht's AB-3 in the background.
Not sure who the guy in the car is.
Guy Carpenter maybe?

Donnie Allbritain in the 2 car I think this was Pontiac powered.
Dickie Williamson 99 in the background.

Dick Dickerson
Posted on January 7, 2007 at 11:40:27 AM by SuperDave

Dick Dickerson, clearly one of the most popular drivers of the era. The handle bar mustached driver was a fun lover.
I had many a laugh with the El Patio grill sponsored driver and his crewman Bob Friend. Dickersons wife did the devil on the side of all of his cars and it depicted him to a "T". He also had a 34 Ford racer at one time.
Early on he ran the Fairgrounds and Manchester. At the time he ran Canton he also ran Sportsmans with the big boys.
He was building a 34 Ford street rod with a chopped top in our garage. He sold it when it was about done. I often wonder what happened to that car.
Bob Friend and Dick Dickerson both passed away way too young.
Dick had a son I met later on in life he looked just like him. I wonder if he had the racing bug??

One time we had a fire at the garage.
I ran and pulled the fire alarm at 14th and St.Elmo. By the time the trucks got there they had the fire out.
Later on in the middle of the night
A mysterious fire started again. Next day in the paper the headlines read.
"Firemen kept busy keeping hot rods cool". That was clever. We never knew what started the 2nd fire. Dicks 34 got the worst of it. He had to re-lead the chopped top. Thank goodness it hadn't been painted yet.

My knowledge of CMS during the later years is very limited.
So if anyone wants to add something feel free to do so.

Some Thoughts Of CMS
Posted on January 10, 2007 at 12:40:45 PM by SuperDave

First of all I loved CMS. I spent allot
of time there as a kid.
I chose to not go back after 1954. That was my choice and a bad one.
We all make decisions we regret later in life.
Speaking of bad decisions $190,000 for a race trace to make a gravel pit.
Oh my, that was a bad one.
From the looks of some of the pictures the crowds were good at CMS.
To bad but that's the way it goes.
Had things been different maybe I wouldn't be driving 10,000 miles a year to other racetracks. LOL.

Crash picture 1991 who were the players.

I was driving the white car Ralph LeMunyon, I think the driver of the black camaro was Danny Crislip. It was my first attempt at racing. No hot laps first time on the track 7 laps in the heat. I purchased it from Taylor Auto in E Canton he said he got it from the Diano family the car was totaled from this crash, cut up & scrapped thanx Ralph

Heat Race 1982

Canton.jpg" BORDER="0" ALT="">
This photo is the start of a heat in 1982. I'll try to ID some of the cars - #0 (2nd car inside) is Brian Volk, I think #20 is Sketter Stutler, Joel McKnight is 3rd inside followed by Gary Whipkey with Ed LeMunyon and Bob Miller the last 2 cars. I think the car on the pole is Cowboy Bob Johnson and the car 2nd outside is Jack Johnson

Group Photo
Posted on February 3, 2007 at 09:52:04 AM by Ed LeMunyon

This photo was taken before the 1982 "A Division" 50 lap season championship race.
I can ID most of the people in this photo.
(neiling from left to right) Steve Signs, Lenno Lemmo, Bill Groves, Mel Carver, unknown, Bernie Booth.
(2nd row, the short guys) Raby Collins, Ed LeMunyon, Mike Tiffey.
(back row) Sketter Stutler, unknown, Brian Volk, Hank Lang, Chuck Harris, Gene Taylor, unknown, Bob Miller, unknown, Gary Whipkey, unknown, unknown, Joel McKnight, Dennis Pettit, Mike Miller.
I apologize for forgetting names or misidentifying people - it's been a long time!.
Thanks,
Ed LeMunyon

The "unknown" next to Skeeter Stutler is Charlie Jasinski, who just dominated the stock car division by winning his heat and feature at Sharon on 9/23/07. The "unknown" next to Gene Taylor is me...Cowboy Bob Johnson. This was the best group of gentlemen to race with in the world!

Bud at the "Leaf"
Posted on May 25, 2007 at 10:20:11 PM by SuperDave

This was probably 1964 at Cloverleaf. A "Winner take all" series where the top point men ran a 3 races, each changing postitions at the end of 4 laps. Bud Middaugh, Bill Forney (in the middle) and Roy Gemberling (outside). They would start with the top 20 until it got down to 3 cars. The winner of the last best of 3 races got a watch and a trophy.

All The Diano 's and Nick Too
Posted on June 17, 2007 at 10:15:37 PM by SuperDave

Back in the heyday of racing Tony Diano was a force to be reckoned with all over the racing area.
He turned the reins over to AJ Diano. There also was a Mario Diano who was equally as good.
I think he was maybe a brother..
They continued Tony Sr's winning ways.
Now there is a 3rd generation driver coming along Nick Diano.
I think maybe Mario's son and Grandson of Tony Sr.
Not sure if he is (AJ) Tony or Mario's son. Help me out here

o am looking for info On Bill Oliver. If you can shed any light let us know.
Did he ever drive for Slims Radiator on the corner of 12 and Market in Canton Oh.?
It would have been a blue and yellow 39/40 Ford and would have been with the NASCAR Modifieds about 1950/52.

This pic was taken around '68 or '69. The man on the left is Bill Stemple. He owned the car and also a gas station and garage.
I remember after the races, we would all go to the bar at the end of the road and everyone would party all night. We had a great cheering section at the races. We would all chant "car 44 where are you?" when they were coming out of the pits.
Cheryl.

Chat With Butch Ginther
Posted on March 14, 2007 at 01:07:35 PM by SuperDave

I went to Butch Ginthers place today.
He lives on the street right where the main entrance to the speedway was.
I spent about 21/2 hours talking and looking at pictures and clippings of our past.
Butch and wife have done a nice job of chroniclizing (hows that word)the history of the speedway and competitors in scrapbooks.
Butch even keeps track of the ones that have passed on with their obituaraies in the scrapbooks.
So thanks Butch for having me over and thank you for keeping the ol speedway alive in our memories.
It will be 2 yrs. until the next reunion. I hope we are all still around.

Expo Speedway ran two races last year during the fair.  They are looking at possibly doing three this year.

Southern Ohio & R&R Speedways are closed or are they listed under something else?

WOW! What a memory! This happened in Sep't 1953 at Sportsman Park and it was the very first stock car race I ever atteneded age 13. What's not showing is E.J. Allen's #4 laying upside down on the grandstand side of the fence! Brings back a LOT of memories! II actually raced hardtp division at Canton a few times in 1958.

the boone hill speed way was located off of county road 25 a between troy and tippcity if you look at flash earth sattilite you can still see the outline of the track right along the rail road tracks if you follow 25a out of troy south you pass boonehill drive and it is on the next road to the left the road is not marked with a name take this all the way to the railroad track

Baldy Baber Jr. This looks to be the 36 Diano car with Baldy's name on it.
Hmmm got to be a story here somwhere...

This is in fact a Diano #36 that Baldy drove.  The motors were built by Dave Petrick, a neighbor of my father.  Dave's son Dan, and myself were always in the garage messing around Saturday afternoon while they were getting ready yo go racing.

Superdave  I just wanted to say it is great seeing all this old information on the Canton Motor Speedway. I spent many a saturday night at the track back in the sixties. My father (Vince DeLillo) raced there a few times, and he was also on the crew of a gentleman who is now my stepfather(Norm Calhoun). Those were the days. Thank you for bringing back those memories.

First post here so I apologise if this is the wrong topic, but I often pass what looks to be an old dirt oval track travelling south on 77 by New Philadelphia.

The road is called Mathias Speedway Rd.  but I have not been able to find any information on it at all.

To the list of closed tracks, you can add Middletown Speedway, Middletown, Ohio. Also Trojan Speedway & Boone Hill Speedway, both were around the Troy area.

That was a motorcycle short track that ran through the 1970's. Ran by Hugo Mathias and family. I have alot of friends that raced there including Ronnie Rall. Was supposed to be a great facility. There was a huge post on flattrack.com about the track, but they recently "upgraded" and I can't find it. I think there may have been a MX course and Hare Scrambles area in addition to the short track.

Near as I can tell Manchester Speedway was at this location

Johnston St NW  between Akron Ave and Highmill Ave off Portage Rd. before Canal Fulton

Latitude, Longitude
40.900433,-81.546235

What looks like the track on the right is not. That may have been the horse track that came later

I think the unlettered blue Nova is a Draime car. Jeep Iacobucci drove it in the OHIO 500 race at Barberton and the motor blew up. I think Dave Draime was scheduled to drive it, but they wanted to give him a little more experience, or so I was told.

Oh, man, I googled my dad's driving name and your page came up. I do believe my dad was the "Tex Frisbie" in your post. Do you have any more info on him? He talked about racing, but we never wrote anything down. I just know it was in the 50's and in this area and he went by the name "Tex". He was born in 1925 and passed away in Sept. 1995 from leukemia. He was the most amazing man I have ever met and I'm proud to say I'm his daughter. I will see if my mom or sister or I can find a photo of him with his car.

Would anyone who knew him please be able to share stories about Tex Frisbie?  He was my Dad.  I've attached a photo of the car Daddy drove. I don't think I have any photos of him with the car, though.

I grew up in Canton, Ohio and lived on 8th ST S.E. just a stone throw away from CMS. We moved to CA way back in 1961 but I remember the roar of engines on those Ohio warm summer night sitting on the porch with family. I was child then but my early memories are summer nights catching lightning bugs with the roar of engines in the distance coming from CMS. I have never been back. Recently I looked at google maps and tried to find the track but it's been turned into a gravel pit. Also my old house is gone, along with our neighboors, turned into a freeway off ramp. My dad use to take me to the races and I remember once some driver went right through the south track fence and disappeared into the darkness. There was a huge gasp from the crowd and the announcer went nuts with excitement. Suddenly the car came flying out of the darkness and back through the same hole in the wall and rejoined the race. The crowd went nuts!! I remember in the late 50's they use to have a fireworks display in the infield on the 4th of July. On one occasion they fired a mortar shell straight up and it came straight down and detonated just over the heads of the pyro techs. Fortunately nobody was hurt.
We moved to Riverside, CA way back in 1961 and we lived a stone throw away from Riverside International Raceway. I used to sneak into the raceway especially when the track was closed during private race car testing and would hide in the sagebrush and watch. I am one of the first people ever to see the first running of Carol Shelby's Cobra Daytona Coup in a private test (I was hiding in the sagebrush) which went on to win a world championship. Now Riverside Raceway is also long gone----------turned into shopping centers and housing tracts. Sad but I will always remember those warm summer nights in Ohio with the sounds of CMS filling the night.

Sorry, but my mom was incorrect. I don't believe this is my dad, Gomer "Smokey" Lewis. He did drive a blue #1 camaro in the early 80's, and to be honest, dominated street class, but his was a 1973, and I'm not sure this one is that early. Hard to tell not seeing rear of car. Plus, dad never had a yellow fire suit.

Some people may know dad better by the "Great White Whale" he drove in the mid to late 70's at Canton and Midvale. It was a white, 4 door, Olds Delta 88, with orange trim, #69. He got his nickname Smokey from Midvale announcer Charlie Jones because dad would slide that boat through the corners, like a dirt track, smoking the tires. Hard to pass something that big when it's taking up a groove and a half. ;)

Dad has been gone now for 12+ years, but loved Canton Speedway, and left me great memories of the Diano's, Malcuits, Roher, Linard, Whipkey, and so many others. Peddle to the metal guys!!!
