Ray Smeznik of Cleveland in Bert Lasiki's "Hoppin Hare" at Sportsman Park.  They had a large model rabbit in the trunk and when Ray would win, he would pull a lever and the Rabbit would pop out.  Ray also drove the Anderson Chev 162 and some MARC new cars.  He finished up his career at Cloverleaf Speedway driving a late model in the 60s.  He was one of the yop drivers at Sportsman Park

The Rowe-Terlop-Hudock 57 Chevy Hurricane Late Model, powered by a 292 Chevy six.  Driver Bob Terlop picked up 6 feature wins at Painesville in 1970 with this car and set the track record twice.  He also picked up a couple of victories at Cloverleaf that year.

Bob James, of Maple Hts, OH.  Winner of over 1,000 feature events in a career that stated in 1946 in the "Roaring Roadsters".  Bob drove coupes, supermodifieds, late models, MARC new cars and ran part of the 1964 season as a team mate to Richard Petty for Petty Engineering and Bob's old friend, Lee Petty.  Still one of the best I've ever seen.

The ARCA Bondo/MarHyde car, owned by Jim Curtis and driven by his brother, Ed Curtis at MIS. 1994.  You can tell this is a low-buck operation.  Check out the mis-matched uniforms.  The old guy in the straw hat is yours truly.

A very young Denny Hudock (left) and a young Kenny Berends assemble the new stroker flathead in 1954 as Chick Berends, Kenny's Dad looks on.  A race motor, built in a basement, balanced on grain scales and assembled by a couple of young guys.  Not today!  Write a check for $30.000 maybe.

Johnny Nagy picks up a win at Lorain County Speedway in 1950.  The track opened in 1949 as "Whiskeyville Speedway" and ran roadsters. The roadsters were deemed to fast and the track changed it's name to Lorain County Speedway and has been running every year since

Jimmy Florain wins the first race for Ford in NASCAR GN.  Dayton Speedway in 1950.  When Ford finally got around to honoring Jimmy at the 100th anniversary, he had already passed on.  He drove at Darlington in the first Southern 500 and won a lot of races in the Dick Swartzlander Midget.

Larry Dickson in the Polak Penske PC5 Cosworth at Indy.  Larry started out the season by shocking everyone with the 4th fastest time at Phoenix.  Larry qualfied 9th at Indy in the year old Ex-Tom Sneva car and ran well until motor gremlins appeared around the half-way point.  Larry went on to some good finishes at darmed near won the Pocono race.  The radio guys kept asking "who is this guy Larry Dickson?"  A fuel problem at the end moved Larry back to 5th place.  A concerted effort was being made to find additional sponsorship by ssharp, myself, the Fahlgren Agency and the guys at Valvoline, but it just didn't happen.  Just like today, if you have the money, you can go faster than someone who's broke!

This should bring back some good memories.  A full-house 8BA flathead.  The motor is in the restored racer of Tony Gullatta.  Look for some photos of the complete car, plus Tony's old Leffler, and some things he's working on now.  The man is a master mechanic and restoration specialist.

Yes folks, that's Larry Dickson at a URC race in 1964 in Hamburg, NY.  Larry took the URC by storm, wheeling George Nesslers #2.  He won Rookie of the Year and the Points Championship that season, beating out teammate, veteran Earl Halquist in Nesler's othe car, the #1.  George was so pleased that he ran Larry in a couple of USAC sprint races at the end of 64 and that was the beginning of the Big Time

I was riding "shotgun" on our return from our first ARCA race at Charlotte when the accident happened.  A flatbed carrying heavy machinery had flipped moments before we got the scene and Ed Curtis, who was also the racecar driver, was at the wheel of the truck.  Somehow we manage to get through with a minimum of damage.  I smoked a pack of ciigarettes before we got the the next rest stop.  An amazing experience.

Unidentifed driver in this Buick LM convertible taken at Midvale in 1968.  If anyone knows the identity, let us know.

Thanks

1/1/08  I checked an old record sheet for a number 30 that raced once at Cloverleaf duriing the drivers strike.  There were two number 30s entered in one race.  A number 30b (the "b" assigned by the track for scoring) listed as Russ Draime as driver and a number 30 with John Manigold as driver.  I don't remember Russ every driving at Cloverleaf and the name John Manigold doesn't show up anywhere else during the previous year.  Number 30 was not a popular number during the first years at Cloverleaf.  Mike Pirro used the number 30 after sitting out a year and found the number taken by Glenn Gault at Heidelberg.  Glenn had run 32 for years. So, I'm stiill not sure who the driver in the 30 is and I'm hoping John S. or one of the other LM followers can help out.

When Stock Car Racers were just that.  Erick Erickson, the West Coast Stock Car Champion in 1949 and 1950 and named to the West Stock Car Hall of Fame in 2003.   His son Fred and I are good friends and I got to attend the induction ceremonies in California in 2003.  Erick was inducted with Dick Bown, recently deceased LA Times racing writer Shav Glick and some other great drivers.  I shared a table with legendary sprint car driver Walt James, Altamont Speedway owner and still driver (at 80) Dick Carter and my friend Fred Erickson.  I also met up with Les Richter and Parnelli Jones as we were walking into the hotel, and got to talk to Rodger Ward for a spell.  Dick Carter was the guy who leased Altamont Speedway to the Rolling Stones for the infamous rock concert where some Hells Angels killed some concert goers.  It took Dick 8 years to untangle that mess.  Dick also ran a 24 hour stock car race at Altamont, by himself.  No crew, no reliefe driver, just him,  The 1941 Pontiac straight 8 was quite a car.  Erickson knew how to make it work and won an number of races in it.  NASCAR legislated it out of competition because of it's age and Erick came right back with a 48 Pontiac and a 50 Pontiac.  These cars were off of a used car lot in LA that sponsored Ericson and were really "stock".
This car was the family "grocery getter" besides being a race car.  Not too many Pontiac 8's running.  Erick was asked by Bill France to come east and they drove a 50 Pontiac from LA and raced at Darlington, Trenton, Canfield and West Memphis and then drove back to California in the car they raced!

Hard to believe but this is what's now known as Lowes Motor Speedway.  Taken in 1962 during the World 600.  Check out the guard rails and the grandstands.  For any one you who have been there lately, you can see how much money Bruton Smith and Humpy Wheeler have spent turning into one of the finest tracks on the NASCAR circuit.

Update:  I received an email from Bob May with the following info:  The Impala had been sold to Bob Blaney and May was running a 63 Plymouth when this picture was taken.  Both cars finished in the top 5.  Thanks to Bob for the update.  He's getting his scanner warmed up and we may see some pictures from him soon.

Dick Seymour started his driving career in the old Novice Division at Sportsman Park. He moved up to the Sportsman Division after purchasing the former 17X Chevy/Olds owned by Shorty Christianson and drivien by Jim Florian.  Dick acquitted himself quite well in his one season at Sportsman Park but wanted to move on to open wheel cars.  He did quite well until a crash and terrible fire at New Bremen, while driving the Duane DePuy RE sprinter.  Dick recovered and continued his career.  I understand he's still living around the Cleveland area and comes to the races every now and then.  He was an impressive, smart driver.

Larry Dickson in a stock car!  Larry signed on to drive Ritchie Giachetti's Banjo Mathews Torino in the 1972 Daytona 500.  Larry started mid-pack and had worked his way into the top ten before the big 427 just distentegrated.  Car owner Ritchie Giachetti would go on to fame as the manager/trainer of Heavyweight Champion Ernie Holmes, and the trainer/cornerman of Mike Tyson in the fight that Tyson bit off Evander Hollyfield's ear along with his brother Bobby.  Ritchie also worked as an advisor to Sylvester Stallone on the 2nd and 3rd "Rocky" movies and had a walk-on part in the Stallone "Over the Top" arm wrestling movie.  Ritchie and I are still good friends to this day.

Bob James after winning the Tri-State 150 at Heidelberg in his 57 Chevy convertible.  Bob always ran well at Heidelberg, but this was the only long-distance race he won there.  Finished well in the 250 but couldn't seal the deal for whatever reason.

Powell Speedway located north of Columbus of Route 23, back in the 50s.  I can ID two cars, the 88 of Elzie Whetnall and the 21 of Jack Bowsher.  Powell was torn down a few years back and  there are now $400,000 homes sitting where the old track used to be.  Progress?

The late Tony DeLillo with the Dick Krotz machine.  A bad fire at Toledo ended Tony's driving career, but it didn't keep him away from the race track.  He owned a real fast E-Mod driven by Timmy J at Lorain and Sandusky.  We came up with Tony, racing hardtops and then late models.  A great guy and fun to be around.

More hardtops from Cloverleaf.  This division packed the stands on Saturday nights and usually had 24 car features, 24 car semi-features and 10-15 cars in a consi.  And, you were usally out of there by 11:00 PM.  They ran a tight ship back then.  You had better be in line for your race before the green for the race on the track.  3 spins and you were out.  No messing around.

. Kenny Berends early 1940s Hillegass sprint car.  Powered by a Model B flathead 4 cylinder with a Model C crank and dual carbs.  This car is a real beauty and has some nice racing history.  Kenny did the restoration on the car about 15 years ago and it's still outstandin.

Ramo Stott in his Winged MOPAR.  Ramo was an IMCA Late Model champion from Keokuk, Iowar and was very competitive in both the NASCAR and USAC stockers.

Whe Ed Curtis ran his first ARCA speedway race back in the late 90s, Ramo volunteered his help with the car and did the spotting for Ed.  The car ran well up to about the half-way point and the engine let go.  We got some National TV exposure as ESPN carried the race and featured Ed as one of the newcomers making his first ARCA start.

Jeep Iacobucci picks up a big trophy and a big check for winning the Cleveland 200 at Cloverleaf Speedway in the Blackie Joseph/Chieftain Trucking FORD.  Jeep was tough in the long races at the Leaf, winning the 200 again the next year.  The car was wrenched by Charlie Bridwell and Bobby Giachetti.

Jeep Iacobucci picks up another win at Cloverleaf Speedway in the Bridwell #69.  Charlie was a Ford man, through and through and he could make them run and Jeep could drive them to the front. Jeep was the all-time money winner at Cloverleaf when it closed it's doors in the early 90s.

The famed Dean Van Lines roadster with Eddie Sachs at the wheell.  1963 Trenton.  This car would later be discovered at the Lorain County Speedway running as a supermodified.  Historian Tom Saal and Ernie Holden identified the car and Jud Phillips confirmed the identity by the unique roll bar and some repair work and welding that was done on the frame.  Tony Gullatta of Garfield Heights, OH did the complete restoration of the car from parts that the supermodified owner had saved and has a complete step-by-step photographic history of the restoration.  Vic Yerardi later purchased the car and re-did some of the cosmetics and later sold the car to the Bahre family of Loudon, NH (the folks that owned the speedway up until a month ago).  Holden and PPG had the car on tour for awhile and then Holden had some health problems that forced the sale of the car.  I love those old roadsters.

This is a pretty old (1947) picture from the Barberton Speedway showing Bob James in the white roadster climbing the wall as Johnny Duris slips underneath him.  Bob told me that he doesn't know how, but the car landed on all 4 wheels and he went back racing that night.

Curtis Prichard in the #6 and Bobby Jones in "the batmobile" lead the LM field down for the green flag at Cloverleaf Speedway in 1964.  Also identified in the field are #75 Same DeCapite, #24 Ron Fike, #99 Lou Pallotta, #89 John Steen, and #63 Jim Moore.  Somewhere in the middle of the pack is Jeep Iacobucci and  I think the 1960 Ford on the outside is Ron Pejeau.

Red Moore was originally from the Youngstown area.  He was a motorcycle racer at Canfield in the late 40s and ealy 50s and then moved to Cleveland where he was the parts manager for a Pontiac Dealer.  Red's 56 Pontiac, owned by Don & George Sherman was powered by a bored OHC Pontiac 6 and was a threat to win anywhere.  Red had a lot of success in the old Hardtop Division and the 6 cylinder Hurricane Late Model Division.  He's living in Florida these days and I try to stay in touch.  Another one of the good guys.  I almost forgot.  I lettered the car for him and when I was leaving, I remembered I locked my keys in my trunk.  Red and the Shermans bailed me out, as usual.

A rare picture of Dick Linder in Ed Lowther's AAA Sprint car.  Dick was the hottest thing going in the early 50s, winning at Heidelberg, Sportsman Park, Canfield, Washington, PA and almost everywhere else he and car owners the Palone Brothers out of Rice's Landing, PA.  decided to go.   Shortly after this picture was taken, Dick was killed in a AAA Sprint race in eastern PA.  He was scheduled to take his Indy drivers test and qualify for the Indy 500.  We all thought he'd be a sure thing.  RIP, Dick.  You were a great one.

Harold Smith in Jack Steck's Buick powered supermodified at Heidelberg.  Shortly after this, Harold switched to running stock cars for Bob May and Jeep Leonardo  They were "money" racers, looking for the big purse events to run and they won their share.  Harold was also the MARC (now ARCA) New Car champion in 1963.

Burton Fairgrounds Speedway picture from the early 1950s.  Those guys really put on a show and "traded some paint".  Looks like they traded some sheet metal too.

Todd Gibson in his famed #0 ex-Indy roadster at Sandusky.  Todd was darned near unbeatable with this car at Oswego, winning something like 12 features in a row.  After winning at Oswego, he'd show up on Sunday's at Cloverleaf Speedway for the Open Competition Supermodified shows there and win his share, too.  Todd was inducted into the Lorain Speedway Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Sandusky Speedway Hall of Fame in 2004.

My son Joe with one of his favorite drivers, Dave Robinson, at Ohio Valley back in the late 70s.  Joe had three favorites:  Larry Dickson, Dave, and Roy Miller.  He still talks about them today after 30 years.  All three were great to him and left an impression on what a good racer is like.  It must have rubbed off a little, as Joe won the Go-Kart Gran Prix they held in Parkersburg in 1979.

"Jeep" Leonardo.  Driver and car owner.  Jeep got his love for racing while working for his father, delivering ice to Sportsman Park back in the 30s as a young kid.  As soon as he turned 21, he put together a car and raced at Burton.  Later that year he entered the NASCAR Ohio State Championship race and was involved in a multi-car crash.   Jeep drove for a number of different owners and posted wins at Sportsman Park and Canfield driving the Gust-Adolph 52, the Mc Grath 53 and Val Potisek's #43 Mac Tools Firedome Hemi/Plymouth.  Jeep lost two years of racing serving the 101st Airborne in the Korean conflict and drove again until Sportsman Park closed.  He later partnered with Bob May building the potent #44's and then went on his own with the #4 Chevelle driven by Bob Ashbrook, Harold Smith, Larry Pendelton and others.  When I worked a deal for Larry Dickson to run Rich Giachetti's Torino at Daytona, Jeep Leonardo was the crew chief.  He moved to Florida in the 70s and passed away about 12 years ago.  To Jeep everyone was named: "PussyKat"  Look to your left at the Avatar and you'll see Jeep Leonardo

The late Lou Pallotta behind the wheel of Mike Pirro's 32.   Lou got a late start in racing by was a quick study.  Before the end of his first season at Cloverleaf he had picked up the first of many feature victories.  Lou had also driven for Dale Peterman in the #53 and the Kunar's #76 and Carmen Virzi's 99 before stiking out on his own with an Allison chassis Chevelle #72 and later an Allison Camaro. Lou's businesses were taking more of his time and he hung up the helmet.  He was inducted in the Lorain's Hall of Fame in 2005

Roy Sherman poses with the Zeiter kids at the Akron Rubber Bowl, probably around 1947.  I met Carson Zeiter Jr. at a Toledo Speedway Reunion a few years ago and spent some time with him and his wife, looking over all the old pictures he had.  Jimmie, Steve and I would have a ball spending a few hours looking at those pictures

I'm not sure who is behind the wheel, but it is the same car.  Harold was never that thin.  Ever.  But he sure could drive.  I'll check around and see if we can figure out who that is.  I'm not sure why Jack would have changed numbers, either.  Steck was working for Ray Smith turning the wrenches on the Smith Speed Shop USAC sprinter driven by "rookie" Larry Dickson.

BobHayduk in Duane DePuys Rear engined sprint car at Lorain County Speedway.  Bob holds the honor of winning the very first race flagged at Cloverleaf Speedway (the dash) and the very first feature event at the track, driving Mack Clingan's #19 "Gray Ghost".  To back that up, Bob returned the next week and won his 2nd feature in the same car.  A veteran of Sportsman Park and Canfield, Bob once drove for 24 different owners in a season.  I can attest to that, as I was one of the owners.  I was 15 and co-owned a 1950 Ford Factory Stock with my cousin Charley, and friends, Fred, Rudy, and Ed.  I wasn't old enough to go into the pits and had to sit/stand at the fence and holler at Bob to go faster.  I still see Bob and his wife Coletta pretty regularly.  Bob's son, Bob Jr. is the flagman for the Midwest Supermodified Association.  Guess it runs in the family

Lou Pallotta at Sharon Speedway.  Lou's ride was a brand new Bobby Allison built Camaro.   Lou qualified well, but got involved in somebody elses's mess during the race and didn't finish.   Lou later  hung up his helmet and concentrated on his auto parts business and the golf course he owned with driver Ron Fke.  Lou passed away about a month ago, and his smiling face and self-deprecating jokes are missed

My long time buddy Kenny Berends picks up his first feature at Sportsman Park in 1955.  Winning a feature was big time at Sportsman Park.  Bob James led in wins with 41 and Mike Klapak was 2nd with 38.  It dropped down to 14 (Mike Little), 12 (Dick Linder and Mack Clingan) and quickly into the 2 and 1 wins.  The car was the ex-Kitty Katt "0" driven in Nascar  GN competition by Dick Linder, Mike Klapak, Bob James and Mike Little.  Ken and his Dad bought the car from driver Gene McGrath.

The "other Jeep".  Jeep Iacobucci got his start racing jalopys at Zieglers speedway.  He graduated to running dirt stockers at Burton and running a Crosley stock car indoors at the old Cleveland Arena.  Jeep was serving in the Army at Ft. Hood where he met a guy who owned a modified and asked Jeep if he would try it out.  This just wasn't any modified, but one that had been built by A..J. Foyt's dad.  Jeep won a few circle track races with the car and even won a Top Eliminator award at a local drag strip.  Jeep returned to  Cleveland and picked up a ride in Ed Hawke's 57 Ford.  One day car owner Charlie Bridwell asked Jeep if he could qualify Charlies car as the driver hadn't shown up.  Jeep went faster than the car ever went before and the first driver swap at Cloverleaf was made when Bobby Jones took over the Hawk car. Jeep and Charlie then got the sponsorship from Chieftain Trucking owner John "Blackie" Joseph, a long time racer and a real character.  They clicked immediately and brought mechanic Bobby Giachetti along with the team.  Jeep won two track championships at Lorain and two at Cloverleaf and won the Cleveland 200 two years in a row.  If I don't get this right, he'll be over to bop me upside the head.

I really appreciate all of the pictures and data on this site as I did on Jimmies original site. Denracer has more pictures and interesting info on the old time racers than anyone I know. I have tried to follow it since my brother Mike Bice started racing about 1950. A lot of greats came through at that time. Bob James, Dick and Gus Lindner, Mac Klingan, Dean Mast, Larry Dickson, Jack Stefan,. I could go on but that was a great era and Denracer is keeping it alive. I woiuld also like to see some of the guys who gave their life to racing but never quite got top billing get some deserved credit. Guys like Baldy Baker, Spanky Wilson, Frank "the flying greek" Kovas, Denver Nutt, Spike Woods, Brin Harris etc.

Cleveland's Bob James takes a turn at the wheel of Jeep Leonardo's #4 Chevelle and brings home a winner.  James and Leonardo were long-time friends who competed against each other in the Sportsman Park/Canfield/Jefferson days.  When James moved out of the #43 Plymouth/DeSoto MAC tools car, Leonardo replaced him.  They also both raced on the McGrath/Industrial Sandblasting team with Don Eggett and Tony Slama.  Jeep needed a driver and asked Bob to fill in and James did what he always did.  Win.  If you look closely on the far right of the picture you'll see Jeep Leonardo, smiling and working another "deal" with McCreary for tires.  The old "Pussy Kat" was a real wheeler-dealer for sure.  He could make a car run and have fun doing it.

Ron Fike in the Myroniak Brothers red & white Howe Camaro.  I believe this was the first time out with the car and I just happened to be facing that way with the Camaro.  Fike was a contender for the Ohio 500 that year, but mechanical ills at the last rade at Sharon, left him a few spots down in the Championship.  Ron won just about everywhere he went, but stuck mostly to Cloverleaf where he was a 2-time track champion

Bob Sibila in his Buick Late Model.  The rules at Barberton where Bob was running on Saturday nights were different than Cloverleafs rules.  Bob ran a 401 c.i. nail head  BUICK V-8 and was always competitive.  I'll never forget the rainbow Howe cars that Bob raced, always finishing well or winning.

The photo of the Jim Cushman #95 on page 15 might well have been taken at Heidelberg; the light stands and the quarter-mile inner track are indicators.  I think that's Iacobucci's car in the background as well.  Many thanks to everyone who are posting photos here, especially Heidelberg; that was my family's home track when I was a kid, so I got to see some tremendous racing.  Looking at these photos from "back in the day" makes an old guy happy.

After looking again, I believe you are correct and it is Heidelberg.  That car was run as 95 in ARCA ad sometimes as 910, Jim's number from the "winged wonder".  Yes, I don't think we'll ever see racing like that again.  The cars, the crowds and the drivers all just having fun.  That is Jeep's Galaxy convertible in the background.  Jeep was a Ford man, through and through, except for one night at Cloverleaf when he blew up the Fairlane and asked if he could run our Camaro.  I think he drove Bob May's or Jeep Leonardo's cars at Heidelberg on one-shot deals, too.  I know DeLillo did.  How about digging through your old pictures and posting them?  I'm sure we would all love to see them.

Johnny Wohlfiel.  A top midget driver before and after WWII.  Jn 1941 Johnny operated a "midget auto racing drivers school" at Sportsman Park in Bedford, OH that was well-attended.  I talked to one old-timer, Johhny Kovack, who told me it was no "BS", he showed you how to go fast!  Johnny owned two midgets and had a special double decker trailer to haul both of them.  Often, he would make a deal with a promoter to "rent" his 2nd car to a local driver, with a "you pay for what you break" clause

John Benson Sr.  Johnny Benson was a top supermodifiied pilot in the 60s inMichigan.  When the class started to go south, Johnny went LM racing, with cars like this very trck 72 Chevelle.  This picture was taken at Sandsky Speedway in 1971.

Brook Park,OH's Ed Curtis at Charlotte.  A blown motor took him out of the race just past mid-point.  The car was the ex-Kodiak Monte Carlo, last driven by Steve Grissom.  ARCA sure has changed since the days we ran.  There were no development teams and only a few big-dollar operations.  Now, the minor league for the Cup Developmentt drivers, it's become really difficult for the "little guys" who were out there trying to do their best.

Jeep Leonardo's #52.  This was always a top running car and Jeep had a way with getting to the front.  The next season he drove the McGrath 53 and after a stint in the ARMY came back to take over the wheel of the potent MAC tools #43 Firedome Hemi teamed with Jimmy Romine in a team car #043 Hemi

Veteran Late Model driver Sam DeCapite.  Sam was always up near the front but never won the track championship.  He came back after a short retirement and finally won the championship trophy.  Another one of the good guys.

Tom Gelviin would race anywhere. anytime and twice on Sundays.  He hooked up with Doc Styblo( a dentist and a real racer) and brother Bob Styblo and raced together for almost 10 years in the #82 cars, first in a 34 Chevy coupe with a 6 carb Oldmosbile, to a former AJ Foyt sprinter  that Doc had acquired.  They ran it as a supermodified and the traveled all through  Southern Ohio, Western PA, Maryland, and the Ohio tracks that paid the most.  Bob and Doc were family friends and I got to got along to the races with them, sometimes being gone for 4 days!  My Dad just shook his head and wondered what would become of me.  It was like running off to be with the circus!

Tony Gullatta's beautifully restored Leffler sprint car.  Tony put a lot of hours into the car making it "just right"  One day a vintage race car ethusiast from Oklahoma called Tony and asked about the car and if it were for sale.  Tony told the gentlemen it wasn't for sale and the then the Oklahoma gent laid a number of the table that Tony coulnd't refuse.  The car is now in Oklahoma in a good home and Tony is at work on a Trevis Sprinter and a Tobias Modified.  I'm a little biased, but Tony's restoriation work and attention to detail is among the bes in the country.

Two views of the Easter Sunday accident where Bill Goodnight somehow jumped the retaining wall and landed in the grandstands.  Fortunately, there were no serious injuries.  Bill was taken to the hospital for bumps and bruises and observation and four or five fans were also treated..  Kevin Ruic, Ray Adamic and I were standing across the track when this happened and we were almost in shock, but, like everyone else, ran to the other side of the track to see what we could do to help.  One of the scariest moments I've seen in racing.

Ernie Lowe picks up a victory in the B-4 Supermodified at Midvale in the 60s.  The B-4 and the #58 were two supers that Ernie won a lot of races in.  Ernie was inducted intoLorain Speedway's Hall of Fame in 2005.  Always a nice guy to talk to and top driver.

Ed Curtis at Atlanta sporting a Howard Stern image.  The deal was with a Cleveland TV station that was picking up Howard's TV show.  While the deal did bring a lot of notice to Ed and the car, no sponsorship $$ were generated.  That's how it goes.  He was mentioned on Howard's show, but that didn't bring any money to the table.

Ed continued to race the speedways in the ARCA series until a bad crash at Talledega ended his driving career.  He usually makes the cruise-in scene in his Street Legal ex-Cup car the #88 UPS Taurus.  It was a real race car converted to street use, not just some stickers like others we've seen.

Bob James at tje Berea Fairgrounds in 1947 or 48 in Jack Peters' roadster.  Jack bought the car in Chicago from the guys that built it,  Vince and Andy Granatelli, who were promoting racing shows at Soldiers Field.  I'm told that this was "one hot piece of equipment" and that Bob won a lot of races in it, all over Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland.

Actually Denny, this photo is from 1974 at Sharon from the Steel Valley 200. After Lou quit the first time while leading the points at Heidelberg in June of 1973, he came back to run at the Pittsburgher that year in Don Loade's #68 Torino. In late 1974 he returned to action running Sharon and Midvale, (Heidelberg was already closed), before quitting for good. It was 1972 that he and Diano ran Lou's cars at the Pittsburgher.

If I would have written down the information you gave me that was on the back on the photos I probably would have gotten in right, John!  Thank you for putting the timeline right.  Before I post any of the others, I'll make sure to look first!  Thanks again.  The photos you gave to Lou meant a lot to him and are still hanging up in his home office.

Bob Veccia was from my old neighborhood and asked my brother Tom (twig) and myself to letter his car.  A couple of bucks and free beer and a Saturday affternoon, and we got the job done.  It's one of the few cars Tom and I painted together.  He was more in demand for his pin-striping abilities.

Don Arnold of Mentor, Ohio in his 64 Chevelle convertible.  Don was an ex-Arizona dirt track racer with some championships under his belt before moving to Cleveland.  Don was a top-notch driver during the early years at Cloverleaf along with his brother, Dick Arnold.  You can still find Don in the stands at a race somewhere.  He owned a potent E-Mod a few seasons back that was driven by T.J. Stineman, a 3rd generation driver whose Dad, Terry was a fine racer, himself.

Another Cloverleaf Pontiac!  Veterand driver Ken Carpenter with owner Lew Hatch's #26 55 Pontiac OHC 6.  Cloverleaf had three good-running Pontiacs that year with Red Moore, Whitey Spangler and Kenny.  I don't know of any other track that had that many "Indians" running that combination.
