Thank you so much for starting this site. My best friend Tom Lane and I started going to races together in 1965 when his Dad owned the Hilltop junk yard and race track. We would hit Pennsboro in the afternoon and Hilltop in the evening almost every week. I could tell you almost every driver, what car he drove, and his number back then. I was a addicted to dirt racing. I used to visit Jimmies Old Time Racing site every day when he had it going a few years ago. I was really bummed out when he gave it up. I was thrilled when the 4M site was brought to my attention by my friend Tony Martin, but this site is much better. The pictures are bigger and clearer and it just feels more like home. Thank you for doing this and please keep it going.

Thank you so much for opening this site.  I'm trying very hard to put together a pictorial history of racing when I started out as a very young fan in West Virginia.  Your contributions to 4M helped me out a ton and I appreciate it very much.  I look forward to visiting this site often.

I found this on another vintage/old time racing site. Thought I'd borrow it and share it with you other old time racers. I'm sure you'll appreciate and sympathize with the words in this poem.

  HURT

    by Stan Jones

There's many an old time racing man

Who stays away from the track

For it hurts to watch the sport he loves,

And he feels the urge to go back.

He isn't afarid to drive again

As he did in years gone by,

Though he thinks of his friends and their injuries,

And of those that he's seen die.

It hurts to give up the racing life,

It hurts to make the break.

And it hurts to watch the youngsters drive,

 For you notice their mistakes.

And you yearn to take the wheel again

To show how it should be done,

And ghosts from the past will beckon you,

And bid you, "Come and run."

It hurts to quit for the call of the pit

 Is always deep inside,

And you would give the life you live

 To take one final ride.

You'd glady take the risk

For the thrill of the wind pressed goggles

And the feel of the wheel in your fist.

What is up with 4M.NET it won't even let me log in now. They've really run it in the ground. No more for me.

4m seems to come and go. I must admit that I look for racing results there, but I'm getting rather tired of the ups and downs.

I haven't been able to log onto the 4m since the change, and truthfully it may be a blessing.

I get mighty tired of the deceit and back stabbing by so called 'concerned experts' that the 4m seems to attract.

This is just plain enjoyment, and it makes me appreciate the work of race track photographers like good old G.E. Brown, Jack Shutts, Jim Newkirk & others.

If not for some of them, much of our local racing would have been long forgotten about.

Thanks to Steve & Jim for building & maintaining this site.

Jim and Steve,

Thank you for starting these forums! When my buddy Danny...AKA Jackbolt emailed me today about them, I was here quick as a flash...:) It was a dark day in Niles, Oh when Jimmie's old site shut down. I never hung out at 4M, but on our local message board (Racestud's) there is little interest in discussing the Good Old days.

I'm Jan, a 56 year old woman who lives for oval trackin'. I got hooked in 1958, when as a 7 year old, my folks took me to Sharon Speedway to watch my cousin race his '37 Ford coupe. I began my own racing career in 1968 with a flathead powered '53 Ford and raced all over NE Oh. and W.Pa on both dirt and asphalt through the '96 season. I even did a little promoting of a 1/4 mile asphalt oval during that time. I restarted it late last year by joining the Vintage American Race Cars club and bought a '37 Chevy coach (currently for sale) and the East Coast Gremlin modified in my avatar. I'll have the Gremlin on the track for the VARC races at Mercer, Pa, Sharon Speedway and Raceway 7 in Conneaut, Oh.

My two loves are the Late Models from in the day when they were '64 Fords, '66 Chevelles, etc and the East Coast mods of the '60s-'70s. I don't have a great photo collection since all of my money went into my race cars. But I do a bit of amateur writing  and can tell some stories!

Again, thanks for starting this board, guys. If I can help in any way, just holler...

                                     Jan

Super site and super memories. My dad raced from the 70's to the 90's but

unfortunatly I didn't see any of him here, if anyone has any pics from that time

frame of Grabitts, Coshocton, Wide Oval, St. Clairsville, Lakville, Wayne Co.,

Zanesville, Skyline, Tyler Co., R&R in Zanesville and Midway or knows of a

different site for me to surf, I would appreciate to know it.

Again great job on a great site, keep up the good work.

Thank you CWBC28 for your service to our country.

It is ironic in a sad way that up here in your hometown we had the tragic

mining accident and down at "The Hood", a soldier from my hometown

flipped out and killed his wife and himself.

BTW, about your avatar, check out one of my desktop icons. :D

I didn't know any of those boys that died at Sago, most of them were from another town or were a lot younger then me. The last time I was at Sago was in 1992 I think and I was drunk off my azz. We used to party there and get drunk and go swimming. It's a wonder no one drowned. I did know a lot of boys that died in 2006 but thats another story. There's a lot of boys flipping out. There's a lot of boys I know that are getting counseling. If it wasn't for racing and fishing I'd probably be flipping out too. You can't sit around and feel sorry for yourself all day you got to go out and have fun.:D

Rarmen,

Larry thinks it was one he drove for someone else, but wasn't sure. If it is the

one he was thinking about it was a 62 chevy. He  has lost alot of his picture and

I am tring to get as many as I can and doing a new album for him.. He has got

a big kick out of seeing so many pictures of the older drivers that he drove

with and some he had forgotten about. Thanks, Carolyn

got another story for you the day that the 881 Larry Brown came into the

stands it was my mother that the wheel was on the seat beside. She walked

with crutches and couldn't get away. Larry had a very hard time over that

wreck. His wife would call Mom and talk to her alot....Carolyn

Took my basic training at Fort Hood way back in 1961!  Lived in "the pink palaces" while we were there and still have some great memories of Killeen, Temple and Copras Cove.  Thank you for your service.  It's a tougher time than the three years I did.

Thanks for a great website.  I love the old pics and stories.  I grew up hearing stories of the old coupes and all the racing that dad (Paul Prince) and that crew did.  I'm working on  a website about the Prince's and their racing.  Anybody got anything to contribute to the site please let me know.

I was a regular on the old Jimmies OTRP website a few years ago and I was really disappointed when the site was shut down.  Although I now reside in Texas, I was born and raised in Western PA and learned that auto racing was the best sport going in the late 40s at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, OH.  I also took in the racing around the area at Canfield, Sportsman Park, Mercer and Pulaski and anywhere else I could get to.  I left that area in 54 for a long career in the military and during that time made the races in many different places in the country but never was I ever as excited about the sport as I was in that PA/OH area.  I did manage to get back that way for a short period after my military career ended in 74 and while there I managed to take in several races before leaving again because this guy simply got spoiled by being in warm climates all the time and the cold ran me off.  I've stayed in touch with racing in that area through various internet sites and I can not begin to tell you how happy I was to see this site reborn.  Thank you Thank you Thank you.  Can't say it enough.  Most definitely the most complete old time racing site on the net bar none.  Keep up the great work.:D

Dear Steve & Racerjim, thank you from the bottom of my heart for getting and keeping this site alive & well. I saw my first race in 1970 @Skyline Speedway. I was nine yrs old, my dad worked security as an off-duty deputy sherriff. To this day, one of the greatest thrills of my life. Found this site a few years ago and then it was lost. Only recently found it again. Many years & many, many races later, I moved here to Wyoming and it just ain't the Ohio valley when it comes to racing. Only 2 tracks in the whole state. God bless you all and thank you for the memories and letting me on this website.         Don Olbers                 :D

I love it!  Just discovered it yesterday, and some of the photos really take me back.  I'll try to dig out some of my photos from the old Fairgrounds Motor Speedway in Louisville.  I got involved selling NSSN when I was 10 years old and have been involved, except for four years in the service, for 59 years.

Fantastic resource you guy's have assembled here.  I raced locally in Michigan and Ohio during the 80's-90's and the pic's here of Nece, Byrd, Howe, Maier, Fair, Lamp, Sommers, Ruttman, Sennecker and others are great. I also love the old Wisconsin modifieds and USAC stock cars I watched as a youngster growing up in West Allis WI. So thanks again for the great site and the many memories rekindled.

Dave

I've got to go along with these people.  I've found it a great source to find photos of guys I remember from my flagging days when they ran at the tracks featured.

This site is awesome!

There's something here for nearly every circle track fan. From dirt to asphalt, from grocery getters to 410 Sprints, from new to old, weekend warriors to full time racers and, everything in between!

I've been going to the races since at least 1971, and I'm learning more about some of the history of my heroes that I grew up watching and folks that I never saw drive, but heard stories about.

Keep up the great work, folks! The Ohio Valley/West Virginia and Pennsylvania region has an incredibly varied and rich tradition of both dirt and asphalt racing who's stories and photos have found a home to be shared with the rest of the country.

This site is incredible!! I was looking over the 70's Pennsboro shots and was jolted back into the days when EVERY week I saw Cannon, Wisecarver, Goff and Cowan at the then dirt half at Mansfield Ohio. Went to all the Johnny Appleseed Classics.

I have a friend I have been pressing to get the old Mansfield photos scanned he has from the late 50's and early 60's. Two albums CRAMMED with shots of those old crude "modifieds". Even some old Mt. Vernon and Ashland Ohio shots too! I will work on this.

I will pass this site onto my buddies..... to join in!!
