He remembered that Bell Lines also sponsored an Offy powered midget that ran at the Dunbar track with Amos Waddell as the driver.

Also, he had his doubts about the Bell Lines Indy car ending up as the Buzzie Dils/Frank Burris "Deuce".

I can remember going to see the Larry Dickson WKYG Indy racer #80 on display in Parkersburg back in the early '70s (as I recall, it was on display in the parking lot on 5th and Market next to what is now Jimmy Johns Subs, but at the time was a Burger Chef).

Dave, I don't think that the Bell Lines Indy car was the Dil's Deuce.  I'm thinking it was another 50's Indy car that Roger Ward drove and tried to put in the Indy race but may have even missed the race with it.  I have a book of Indy cars that has a good photo of Roger in the Dil's 2 car but right now it's buried in the back of a storage building and I can't get to it.  I'll work on getting it out and post the pix as soon as I get time.

By the way, welcome to the web site.

In 1962 Roger McCluskey started 16th in the Bell Lines Car and was either leading or running second to Roger Ward around lap 166 when the water pump broke and he spun out in his own water , that was the last year that a Bell Lines Car was at Indy ,  I have photos of both the 61 and 62 cars plus the dirt car , will try to get them scanned and post them

Yes sir, Roger McCluskey started in 9th position, led 3 laps and spun in turn 2 on the 168th lap in '62, driving the Bell Lines Trucking Watson. He was credited with 16th place. They also sponsored the old Kurtis which didn't make the race. That yellow Watson was a beauty, would love to see your pictures. Also, adding more speculation to the origin of the Dils's Ford #2, the car Rodger Ward drove in '55 was the ex-Agajanian Special that Troy Ruttmann won with in '52, and Walt Faulkner set a one lap record with in 1950. This car broke an axle in '55, starting the accident that killed Bill Vukovich. The car was still competing in champ dirt events as late as Nov., 1959 at Sacramento with Johnny Tolan driving.

I found these pictures and a story about the Bell Lines dirt car, stumbled onto them. http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z11335/1947_Kurtis_Kraft_Midget/default.aspx     http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z11336/1961_Silnes_Dirt_Champ_Car/default.aspx   The midget story has the pics, and the other one has the story.

Beautiful car and great to see one with West Virginia history.  I can remember seeing the Bell Lines car once as a kid as it was on display at the old Diamond Department store on Capitol Street in Charleston.

I'd be tempted to attend Indy again if this is what they raced there.  Aren't those old cars great looking?  Thanks Merc for the link.

Jimmie:  I was in Parkergsburg that day for my interview with Smoot Falhgren for a position at his ad agency.  We stopped by the Burger King, which I think was in Vienna, to renew old acquaintances and to get back to working for Larry and Russ.  We had some good times back then.

Any chance that this could be the deuce? Rodger Ward raced this car in '55, and here it is in '52 wearing a dirt tire on the right rear after winning the Indy 500.
