some other guys to think of as to # of wins.

dick trickle, over 1,000,

locally, joe mihalic, ralph quarterson, jimmy bickerstaff, tom jarrett, skip furlow, lou blaney, buddy cochran, gus linder, dick linder, buddy o'connor, bill forney

the one win total i wonder about is herb sott. although it seems i saw him win half his races, i believe his total is 524, not over 600. he won # 500 very late in his career, and i know wearing is about 100ahead of him.

i can tell you one win total that is dead on accurate. i never won diddly!!!!!!!!!

Hey Ed!  I'm on that list with you.  It took about a month and I figured out I was not going to be a racecar driver.  My wife-to-be told me that I should probably keep writing about racing rather than driving.  People might remember the writing, but no one was going to remember my driving!

Believe your right. I think I flip flopped Bob Wearing and Herb Scott in haste of throwing this list together.

I also seen Bob James race and win a number of times/he was just an incredible talent...like so many who will never pass this way again.

And yes it is a shame but the way short track racing has evolved you will never see anyone put up the incredible numbers they used to in the past.

Thanks for listening - Bob

Would the dirt LM Hall of Fame consider a driver like Bob James for induction?  Bob raced almost exclusivly on dirt from 1945 to the 1960s when Cloveleaf was built and Heidelberg was paved.  He raced on Heidelberg's dirt until they took one of the great dirt tracks in the area and paved it and then to make matters worse, did the same to Sharon, at least for awhile.

Bob would still run some dirt LM races at Sharon in Jeep Leonardo's #4 when Harold Smith wasn't available and he won a lot of MARC/ARCA new car races driving his own #43 and the Bob May #44 back in the late 1950s.  I can furnish you with a complete history of Bob's racing from 1945 to 1974.  He is in the Lorain Speedway Hall of Fame and a number of smaller halls of fame in Western PA and also won the Dapper Dan award from the Pittsburgh media for his successes and contributions to the sport.  Bob was one of the first to emphasize safety, as he saw too many of his friends lose their lives or badly injured.

Let me know your thoughts on this.

Does anyone know if L.J. Dennis ever beat Bob Wearing? No disrespect to L.J. but I saw Bob Wearing come out of four at Elkins and pass him like he was sitting still. Even my granddad made a comment about it and my granddad hated Bob Wearing. My grandad hardly raised his voice but as soon as the Yellow #1 came through the gates he would take his pipe out of his mouth and start yelling at the car. "Why don't you go wash that thing!" You had to be there. Where where we?.........

reading these posts made me recall a story a buddy of my dads told me about  bob james from the 1960s.bob was from the cleveland area but made the trip down to columbus to run at columbus motor speedway on a pretty regular basis.one particular sunday afternoon it was pouring rain in columbus and bob james called from cleveland to see how the weather was in columbus and if they were going to race that night.my dads buddy whos name was shorty hopper owned and built racecars in columbus in the 50s and 60s and operated a garage in columbus and was one of the wrecker services they used at the track and was in the track office when bob james call came in from cleveland.john knuckles who owned and promoted the speedway told james come on down its beautiful here of course were running.he said he looked like he could bite through steel when he got there to see everyone leaving because they had cancelled.makes you wonder how a guy could win 100 races when some idiot would do that to a guy.
