Will try to assist you with further USAC photos. Seeing myself addressed as leo4502003 is jarring. I feel that I am being too stand-offish. From now on I will sign my my posts with at least part of my real name such as Lee or Bleephead.

| I REMEMBER THAT WE STAYED AT A HOTEL THERE IN THE AREA AND IN THE MORNING WHEN WE LEFT TO GO TO THE TRACK THERE WERE RACE CARS ALL OVER THE PARKING LOT.

| This is the last one and again not sure of the number. Trying to think of another subject matter or track to post more photos under. Attachment: #58.jpg (Downloaded 226 times) Last edited on Sat Apr 25th, 2009 02:05 am by backintime

| Thanks for the great photo from the 69 Tri-State 150, it was my first race at Heidelberg. I was 11, and what a memory of that race. As I recall, Harold Smith had backed his car into the turn 3 wall during practice trying to avoid spinning cars. The crew set to work repairing and, amazingly, the car started the race. As the race wound down, Smith and Colella were in quite a battle, and with about 10 laps to go, Colella tried to get under Smith into turn 3,Smith pinched down, causing both cars to spin. Both quickly restarted, with no apparent damage. During the yellow flag period, I think there was some type of track ruling on the restart positions or something. Smith drove through the inner 1/4 mile track at a high rate of speed and then after some discussion the race restarted. Smith quickly passed Colella for the apparent lead and Colella closely followed him to the checkered. It seemed obvious that Colella let Smith pass, either because he knew that Smith had been penalized a lap for his high speed trip through the inner oval/pit road area, or he wanted to try to pass him again cleanly. But Colella never really got to Smiths rear bumper in the final laps, so I suspect he knew of the penalty. It was hard to hear what the announcer said about it, if he did at all. So it appeared that Smith won the race, but Colella was declared the winner. It is a very memorable race among thousands I've seen since, probably one of the main reasons I've seen so many since then. Needless to say, my family was hooked on Heidelberg, and we made many trips over the last 5 seaons to see race there.

Awesome story ! Harold was a childhood hero of mine, when he drove that beautiful red, white and blue Chevelle, and to this day, 4 is still my favorite #.
Because shortly after I was exposed to that beautiful ride, Jr. Smalley (another of my childhood heroes) started driving the blue #4 Don's Crankshaft Special @ Atomic. Man, I loved that car. Then they put the tall corn pickers on it, and it was and still is one of the most awesome race cars I've ever seen.
